UPDATE (September 1, 2021): Peloton has re-released their Tread with three new safety features: a more secure touch screen, a safety key, and a tread lock. The touch screen is now less likely to detach and injure users, which had previously been an issue. The safety key allows users to quickly and safely come to a stop when using the machine, and finally, the tread lock makes it so users have to enter a four-digit safety pin to use the Tread.
When you get on your treadmill, your focus is on exercise. How your treadmill can hurt you or your loved ones is not a thought that crosses your mind. As with anything else we buy, we expect our exercise equipment to work as it should. It’s all the more upsetting when you or a loved one are injured as a result of something going wrong.
In May of 2021, Peloton issued a voluntary recall of their treadmill models: the Tread and Tread+. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)- the federal agency in charge of protecting consumers from dangerous products- published a release warning consumers about the dangers of the Peloton Tread+ a month prior to the product recall. This release came after many reported incidents of the treadmill pulling small children and pets underneath it, causing injury.
The official recall of the treadmills came after reports that a child had died due to injuries sustained by the Tread+. The CPSC states that there have been 39 documented incidents and one death.
Safety Hazards And Concerns
Peloton is recalling their Tread+ and Tread models for different reasons. This is because the models do not pose the same safety hazards.
The Tread+ model recall came after it was found that adult users, children, pets, and objects could be pulled under the rear treadmill, which could lead to injury or death.
Tread+ owners should also be aware of the gaps in the slatted running belt. You can easily have your fingers, as well as small objects, get caught between the gaps in the slats, leading to possible injury.
Unlike the Tread+, the Tread model doesn’t come with a slatted running belt. Meaning, it doesn’t pose the same safety risks. The Tread model recall came after it was found that the machine’s touchscreen console can detach and fall, potentially injuring users.

What Should I Do If I Own A Peloton Treadmill?
Peloton is offering Tread+ and Tread owners either a full refund or a free repair service for both models. If you own the Tread+, you can have Peloton come to your home and move your treadmill to a place away from small children and pets for no charge.
As these are not mandatory recalls, Peloton treadmill owners have the option of continuing to use their exercise machines as normal. You are not required to do anything about your Peloton treadmill. However, it is strongly recommended that you stop using it.
What To Do After A Peloton Injury
You use exercise machinery and equipment to improve your quality of life, not diminish it. If an accident on your Peloton leaves you injured, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
After you seek medical attention, reach out to a personal injury attorney. An experienced lawyer will be able to explain to you your rights and options. If you don’t, you may lose out on getting the reparations you deserve.
