Hoverboards are the latest tech gadget to hit the market, becoming one of the most popular items purchased for Christmas in 2015. While they look as though they are something straight out of a futuristic movie, these boards are more like balancing scooters than actual floating devices. Unfortunately, these popular devices have already created a flurry of reports on their propensity to cause serious injury. From dangerous falls to brain trauma and fires, hoverboards are proving to be more dangerous than exhilarating.
What Are Hoverboards?
Hoverboards are electric scooters, essentially. Depending on the brand, these devices can cost anywhere from $350 to $2,000. While they seem like a fun recreational activity, certain cities (such as New York City) and airlines are already starting to ban them because of their increased risk for injury.
Injuries Associated With Hoverboard Devices
It has become quite clear: Hoverboards can cause serious injuries. One of the biggest injuries seen in emergency rooms and clinics across the country is that of falls. These injuries can range from minor scrapes to lacerations, bruises, broken bones, etc. Unfortunately, hoverboards are not secure, and if an operator accidentally goes over a crack (even a minor one) in the paved surface and does not brace himself, he could fall.
Another common issue with these hoverboards is their propensity to catch fire. Several stories have already erupted on social media, as well as local news networks, about how hoverboards have a tendency to overheat – and with that overheating comes a high risk for catching fire. There are currently two lawsuits underway for house fires caused by overheating hoverboards and more are expected to arise this year.
An Alabama man recently recorded his own hoverboard catching fire after riding it a short distance. In Louisiana, a family’s home was completely destroyed when their hoverboard caught fire while charging.
Because of their high risks for fire and injury, more cities are putting limits on their use – and Tampa will soon follow.
What If You Are Injured?
If you have been injured from a hoverboard, you may receive compensation for those injuries. While manufacturers are claiming that the issue is consumers’ use of inadequate charging devices, studies have already shown that the device used to charge the hoverboard is not easily replicated; furthermore, most of the fires reported were using the proper charger. While there are several manufacturers involved in this issue, most are overseas subsidiaries. Regardless of where the device was manufactured, it was still sold in the United States and those that suffer serious injuries – especially traumatic brain injuries– should be entitled to compensation.
